A Welcoming and Diverse Community of Learners

Designing tiny houses in the STEAM lab

Posted Date: 12/17/25 (12:16 AM)

In November, fourth and fifth grade students at Mill Road Elementary took part in an inspiring STEAM challenge after learning about Lowe’s generous donation of over 100 tiny houses to hurricane victims in Asheville, N.C. Motivated by this real-world example of engineering and community support, students became designers and problem-solvers.
Using their math skills, students created tiny house blueprints designed for two people, focusing on calculating and using area effectively. They then brought their designs to life by building small 3D models based on their plans, choosing either paper or Lego bricks as their building materials.
This hands-on project encouraged creativity, critical thinking and empathy while connecting learning to real-world impact.
